THIS!
We watch a lot of classic movies with snow scenes in them.
Meet Me in St. Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Disney's
Snowball Express- just to name a few.
The kids ALWAYS comment on the snow and remind us of how sad it is that they never get to play in the snow, because we live in the South.
Last February, Stacy & I made the mistake of telling our children
(and our nieces) that we would take them to REAL SNOW.

We went skiing in 99'.
Caleb is the only one who remembers anything about it-
but he will tell you that Snow Mass was not his kind of place...too
tourist-y.

I am sure that some of you (who live in snow) are thinking
that we are insane, but snow is the one thing that Southern kids long for
.......and only get about once every 10 years.
The kids have told us that they do not want to ski.
They want to ride on sleds , snow boards, build snowmen,
wear ice skates, and ride in a sleigh-"like the one Almanzo uses
to drive Laura around in Little Town on the Prairie".
Rachel wants Hot Cocoa everyday and Riley wants me to make Chili.
They have it all figured out.
They do not want to go anywhere like Aspen or Sun Valley...too many people. They said that they want "the people (in the town) to be friendly and smile", and they want little cafe's that serve" home~cooking and pie".
AND they would really like to get there by train,"because you can see lots of stuff & trains are cool".
So if you live in a place like this, if you've visited a place like this, OR if you know of a place like this....PLEASE let me know.
Really....I'm not kidding.....
These kids will be forever in your debt.
Peace

well, you can't ski here, but sometimes in the winter it is a beautiful winter wonderland. i could dress up and sing white christmas for them...and they could pLAY with my kids trains...close enough? i will trade you...you can bunk here...my husband wants to come there. he wants to know if you have land that he can turkey hunt.
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, he's serious.;)
wish i could help you but the desert is no place for snow bunnies
ReplyDeleteARE YOU SERIOUS??? You are SO coming to New Hampshire!! (Darn it, why didn't I buy the bigger house- you could have stayed with us. :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I may not be able to make any promises about friendly people. New Englanders are kind of, um....well, LESS than friendly sometimes. But, OH do we have snow, and sledding, and ice skating aplenty!
Here are a couple of places that immediately come to mind: North Conway, NH (that's probably perfect for what you are describing- they even have the Polar Express train!!); Lincoln, NH; Meredith, NH; or maybe Burlington, VT (I hear great things about it, but have never been there). There is always upstate New York, but I'm kind of partial to NH!!!
I really think you should check out North Conway. It does have some tourism in the form of ski areas and outlet shops, but it is NOTHING like Aspen I'd imagine. Plus, there are lots of hippies there!! They have a fabulous downtown with lots of cute shops and great little places to eat! But, you better have some good cold weather gear- they get some serious cold and snow!
You're going to keep us posted on this, right? If you want more specific info,e-mail me (scjchardy@yahoo.com). Scot's territory used to include North Conway, so he knows all about it.
we like to visit Northfield, Vermont and it's much as you describe. It's near Sugarbush ski resort. Grant is a skier, I am not. For years we've stayed in an old farm house. It's on many acres and you can sled and play. It's gorgeous, scenic, and usually snowy in January & February. Northfields is a small college town - we love love love to go to the college ice hockey games - the whole town comes! we've also stayed (since Chloe) at the Sugarbush resort because of the pool & hot tub : ))
ReplyDeletethere's great shopping and eating in that area.
e-mail me if you want more info

we don't have trains, or little diners.. but we are sure to have snow this winter.. You are always welcome here.Besides, I think it would be fun to see what it would look like trying to cram that many people in my house.
ReplyDeleteIf you find a better option, :) please fill us in, it sounds magical!

Hey Andrea.....Those pics have New England written all over them. I'll have to think a bit more on specific locations for you to check out and get back to you! It's so much fun planning a trip!!!!
ReplyDeleteAndrea,
ReplyDeleteIf you send me an email to randclan@comcast.net I can send you a link of an area you might want to check out.

We are Texans and our children L-O-V-E the snow! We are leaving for CO Saturday for a few weeks while hubby is working there. Since we homeschool we are all going with him! We aren't going there this time, but ya'll would LOVE Pagosa Springs. Wolf Creek Ski area is 20 min from town, so this is no ski town. Most people wear boots (and I'm not talking snow either. Great little cafes, shops, and people. e-mail me and we can chat more. It is very reasonable to stay and eat there.

Well, we do get snow here, but not enough of it. Northern Michigan is always fun though! (I say that selfishly, because you would have to drive through our neck of the woods to get there!!!! HA!)
ReplyDeleteI think a snow vacation sounds just fabulous! You will love it. I already can't wait for winter.
Love,
R
PS Did you get your package?
Ok Andrea.....I thought of a place you might want to check out...I've never stayed there, but I've only heard good things about it...http://www.nestlenookfarm.com/NH-Family-Vacations.html Make sure you click on 'winter images'...I think it's right up your alley;-).
ReplyDeleteAsk Jenna about it as well....maybe she's visited. The white mountains are beautiful, and you can't beat New England charm!
I'll let you know if I think of any others.
Oh, and I'll TRY and not take it PERSONALLY that you never emailed me...sniff, sniff.....those apples I was going to send you, well I won't know where to send them;-)))!
Hugs-
Tam
Another vote for PA! Of course Tami is right too, New England for sure!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading a website about two years ago about a place near Kalamazoo, Michigan that has a place that is just for innertubing down hills. There's all kinds of winter things to do in the Kalamazoo area. If you're interested, try finding a Kalamazoo or Michigan winter tourism website for ideas of what to do up there. In northern Michigan people take snomobile vacations. :)
